One of the trickier valleys to repair is the plain tile valley. It can be somewhat awkward and there is a lot of tiles per square metre meaning a lot of felt and battening as well as a lot of laying of tiles and plain tile cutting.
This newly married couple had recently brought this property and were in the process of renovation when the valley started leaking during a thunderstorm. Putting their renovation on hold (they were just about to start plastering and decorating internally) they did a local google search for roofers, after some due diligence, checking out reviews and research they called Synergy.
Firstly we stripped the valley, notice how we strip a good 1/2 – 1m of plain tiles from each side of the valley.
This valley was an original and in order to strip the valley completely we needed to remove not only the ridge tiles but also some bonnet tiles from the rear of the house.
Once the valley was replaced with new felt and batten, including installing the felt under the valley – it’s always best to use a belt and braces attitude with roofs! – we can now start refitting the tiles. Unlike a jigsaw puzzle the tiles never go back to where they started and we don’t see the point in replacing damaged or worn tiles, the replacement tiles stick out at the moment but soon with gain that weathered look.
Onto the finishing touches, while it’s important that the valley, felt and battens are installed correctly and the tiles are now secured there is no need for a neat finishing touch, this is all about pride and reputation !!
As a rule roofers don’t like rain, but I can’t wait to see a little rain on the roof to wash away the tile dust and make this roof sparkle.
